Hi everyone. I posted this over on the yahoo group, but I also wanted to put it here too. We got a new primary chorister, and she doesn't have the internet, she has a very tiny songbook. And I was telling her about this group and the website forum, and she said on Sunday that between getting the internet for this calling and all the props and everything, this is a very expensive calling. It took me by surprise cause when I was chorister, I just never thought like that.
Do you find being the chorister an expensive calling?

Not really, but I have a tendancy to keep things simple. If you try and make it elaborate each time it would get expensive. I usually use GAK pictures that you can get from the library (I went ahead and bought my own but only because I also have two small children). I use the white/black board and draw pictures sometimes. I really think the children like when I draw the pictures because they think its funny that I'm not good at drawing. I use stick figures etc. A lot of times I will find suggestions from Primusic etc and I will change it so that I simplify it a little more. To encourage the children to sing I use a lot of games like Basketball with my child's colorful ball, or baseball, tic-tac-toe etc and they cost $0. If you don't have a ball you can use a wadded up piece of paper. I have spent my own money on some ideas but if I didn't have the money I would have found another way to teach the music or play a song.

Not so far. I try to only use items that are leftover in our Primary closet or at my house.

If she is counting her internet connection as a primary cost, then sure, that's $20+ a month right there. I NEVER spend that much on primary!! A lot of people laminate stuff which can get expensive. I don't. I don't think any calling in the church should be 'expensive.' We're here to teach the Gospel. Maybe she's just feeling overwhelmed with a lot of different aspects of a new calling, and it all got blamed on expenses...

Our entire ward Primary budget for the quarter is $35. That's it. That's all. There is no more. Needless to say I don't spend much money on primary supplies. I do buy poster board occasionally, but if it's not lying around my house it doesn't get used in our Primary. I don't think you have to have elaborate props or costumes to have a successful Primary singing time. One of the participants on the Yahoo group likened being Primary chorister to being a teacher, with the songbook for your manual. Elaborate displays don't make you a better teacher. Love for the gospel and the children, and enthusiasm for the music is really all you need. Our Primary is fun, and I think successful, without spending a lot of money. Just try to help the children learn and enjoy the music and you will accomplish what you set out to do.
