Since we finally have a place to talk about "off-topic" ideas I figured I'd start it up.
Sunday of course was Fast Sunday. I have a dear friend going through a rough trial and was fasting for her. I find when I fast with a purpose I'm more determined about it (aren't we all?) and so very purposefully didn't even drink water during my fast (not quite 24 hours because we forgot and went to dinner Saturday night.)
By Sunday night, however, I was in bad shape. I had a really bad headache that lasted for hours and took the combined strength of a prescription 800 Motrin and an hour with an ice pack to even abate enough that I could function. Forget about communing with the Spirit, I could barely stand to have my family on the same floor of the house!
I was talking to a friend about this, and she said that she doesn't feel like refraining from water is included in fasting. But I know of other friends who think that "food and drink" includes water, not just drinks with nutritional value (which of course calls into question diet drinks - I can see how that's a slippery slope.)
Anyway, what do you think? I think that for myself I'm going to have to drink water just to keep myself physically functioning, but I worry that I'll feel like I'm "cheating" if I do.

I personally think it's the spirit in which you do things. My husband is very much like you, gets a headache and finds life unbearable. So for him to fast, it's a huge undertaking. Now mind you, he's a very tall, slim fellow with nothing extra on him. And I am the opposite. So for him, he needs some fluid before the end, he can get through breakfast and lunch OK, but the afternoon is not good. And if he doesn't have some water, then he's in bed with a migraine for the next day. We each do what we can do, and the Lord knows that where our hearts are, and isn't that what matters? If He knows and is OK with you, who cares what anyone else thinks?

My husband is the same way and I completely agree with you. My husband will fast water for as long as he can and then take in just a little bit so that he does not get as massive migraine from it. I, however, am only hungry and thirsty and as soon as my fast is over and I've eaten etc I'm perfectly fine so I do it all. It really is all about the spirit of the matter and doing all that you can.

The missionaries teach no food or water...BUT there are many exceptions! People who take daily medication, diabetics who can't even fast, etc. I would agree with the ladies who said go without water as long as you can, then have some.
We live in AZ and it is very hard to fast water in the summer, but fasting is a hard thing most of the time anyway, unless you are really praying for something. I have had some wonderful experiences with long fast's and not had the symptoms you have described. It is supposed to bring you closer to the Lord and how can that happen with a migraine? I get headaches most of the time I fast, but they go away rapidly. Also, everyone gets grumpy, right? But it isn't intended to make yourself sick.

The goal is to fast for 2 meals. That would be close to 24 hours without food or water, give or take. That is the goal and not everyone is able to meet the goal just like the goal is to read Scriptures every day but sometimes we miss. It sounds like you are trying to fast but your health won’t quite let you. I get headaches when I fast as well but I find that if I am very well hydrated before I start the fast, it helps. Hydrated does not mean two 8 oz glasses of water before you start to fast. It means well hydrated for 24 hours before you start to fast. Drink a good 8-10 glasses of water on the day you start your fast. No diet drinks- they take the water from your body and will make you dehydrated. Ever notice on a long car trip how many more stops you have to make if you drink a diet soda? Not good while fasting. If you feel a headache start, don’t wait for it to get bad. The Lord does not expect a martyr. Take some medication with a small sip of water and continue the fast. Don’t give up and think you have broken your fast. I have also learned to eat moderately after a fast. If I eat too many fatty items I get sick. I need lots of vegetables, protein and carbs to restore my energy and make my system work properly. Good luck with the fasting. It is a great way to feel the Saviors love and to put yourself in the frame of mind to truly communicate with our Father in Heaven. I hope this helps. Let us know how you do next month. I’ll be thinking of you.

Thank you so much for the tip about hydrating the day before the fast! I think that's brilliant! I will not be fasting this month - our Stake fast Sunday is this week and we are going to be traveling that day - but will absolutely try it in May!
